LapSim 2009 Software Release

Our software release, LapSim 2009, aims to further enhance the training experience when working with LapSim. Below you can read about some of the enhancements in this software release.

User Interface Changes

One of the areas where we have concentrated our effort for the LapSim 2009 release is the graphical user interface. Our focus continues to be on improving the ease of use of LapSim and especially for the users that are in charge of training. We have a long term plan which will keep LapSim the most powerful but also the most easy to use surgical simulator on the market.

The most visible change in this release is the merge of the three different applications that was the interface to LapSim in the past namely; Teacher, Student and Quickstart.

Instead of having three separate applications we now have only one LapSim application. Depending on whether you are logging in with an account that has administrative rights or not you will be presented with the teacher or student mode. QuickStart is removed and the same functionality is moved into the ordinary student mode. In order to keep the system easy to use we added on Auto Sign Up feature that enables new users to create their own user id´s straight from the login page. This is the way most online services like Yahoo, MSN or Google works so almost everybody should be familiar with the process.

We have also added the LapSim reporter which (if you give your consent) logs the way you use the application without storing any sensitive or personal data. This data can then be sent to the developers at Surgical Science who can use it to quickly fix any issues that you may encounter in the software.

A major step has been to enable the support of localization in LapSim. This means that LapSim might show up in your native language in the near future. From 2009 it is possible to have LapSim in Russian, Japanese, Chinese and French.

Course Package

Many of our customers have requested predefined courses to use as templates for their own or to use directly for their trainees. We are happy to report that we have included fifteen predefined courses that vary from beginner to expert level. Some of the courses are designed in house and some have been used for validation studies and submitted to us by the researchers.

New Task Training modules

We have also developed a new module which features three new tasks similar to the ones present in the popular FLS system. The tasks include; Peg Transfer, Pattern Cutting and Ligating loop. All of the tasks can be configured in many ways to vary the training and difficulty level.

Anastomosis enhancements

The Suturing and Anastomosis module has been enhanced to provide better needle handling and many small improvements. More is on the way and is going to be included in future releases.
