Company history
The Surgical Science story starts with a medical science project initiated in 1995 by Anders Hyltander, who at the time worked as a senior GI surgeon at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. Together with the three young, skilled, and brilliant software engineers he tested the hypothesis that real-time simulators could be developed and used to train novice surgeons before they enter the operating room.

The quartet founded Surgical Science Sweden in 1999, realizing the obvious need for laparoscopic surgeons to hone their skills in a safe and well-structured environment before operating on humans, for both ethical and economic reasons. All four founders had previous experience of medical simulation and pooled their complementary knowledge and expertise in the company. A number of essential cornerstones were quickly identified, the most important being that all products should be flexible, upgradeable, run on a standard PC platform, and represent the state-of-the-art in dynamic graphic representation.

Anders Hyltander became president of the newly-started company, Surgical Science, and held this position for several years. The fact that the company president was also a surgeon contributed to the company’s close ties and prosperous dialogue with the medical community, in both clinical and scientific terms.
The first product, LapSim®, began its journey. With a strong focus on usability, applicability in clinical education, and advanced technology, LapSim received a tremendous response when first introduced to the market in 2001, just two years after the company was founded. Since then, LapSim has seen many upgrades and improvements, including a redesigned graphical user interface and add-on modules such as LapSim Cholecystectomy and LapSim Gyn, all of which are just the beginnings of much more to come.

Two of the software engineers and founders, David Löfstrand and Anders Larsson, still work at Surgical Science and Anders Hyltander is still closely connected to the company as senior advisor.
