LapSim Suturing & Anastomosis

After a certain level of proficiency is acquired by training on the more basic exercises offered in LapSim it is time to move on to the challenging task of stitching and knot tying. Anastomosis is the joining of two tube structures by suturing but LapSim Suturing & Anastomosis contains much more than that. In this module package trainees get to learn anastomosis in a stepwise manner where they get to gradually enhance their skills by practicing the different steps separately.

First the trainee is taught how to grasp and pass the needle between two needle drivers. Then, interrupted as well as running stitching is trained on. The next step consists of knot tying. The trainee first gets to practice making a square knot. In reality, however, a square knot is often secured by two or more loops around the instrument by the surgeon. This type of knot is referred to as a Surgeon's knot and is also the next exercise featured in LapSim Suturing & Anastomosis.

Finally the module package contains a side-to-side anastomosis exercise where the trainee gets to apply all the separate steps practiced on in the earlier exercises and join two tube structures by interrupted suturing and knot tying.

The ten exercises featured in LapSim Suturing & Anastomosis are listed below:

  • Needle Passing
  • Interrupted Stitching
  • Running Stitching
  • Square Knot
  • Surgeon’s Knot
  • Stitch & Square Knot
  • Stitch & Surgeon’s Knot
  • Interrupted Suturing
  • Running Suturing
  • Side-to-side Anastomosis
