Exercises
LapSim Basic Skills contains eleven different exercises, listed below.
- Camera navigation
- Instrument navigation
- Coordination
- Grasping
- Cutting
- Clip applying
- Lifting and grasping
- Suturing
- Precision and speed
- Handeling intestines
- Fine dissection
Handeling the camera is the first skill the aspiring surgeon has to master. Basic navigational skills are learned, and an initial feel for how laparoscoopic instruments are handeled is developed.

Moving two instruments in three-dimensional space guided by a two-dimensional image in a precise manner requires a lot of practice. This module provides a safe environment in which the student can begin acquiring these skills.

Using both hands in a coordinated manner is an essential skill for the laparoscopic surgeon. In this exercise, one hand controls the camera, the other an instrument. The teacher defines which hand is used for which task when setting up the exercie.

When the student has acquired basic navigation and coordination skills, it's time to move on to the actual manipulation of objects. Here, the object is to grasp, stretch and move blood vessels, using grasper instruments.

This module introduces the student to actual surgical procedures: cutting, using ultrasonic scissors or forceps. Accordingly, this module features a third manipulation device: a foot pedal used to trigger the cutting instrument.

This module involves both using multiple instruments, as well as increasing element of risk and stress. Mistakes may cause bleeding, calling for a prompt response. Available instruments are clip applier, grasper, scissors and a suction device.

Here, the grasping exercise is taken one step further. An object with tissue-like properties has to be lifted in order to remove an object.

Suturing is the most advanced basic laparoscopic skill featured in this version. The exercise offers a choice between a synthetic and a realistic, video-based graphic environment. The latter reacts realistically to manipulation by the virtual laparoscopic instruments.

A light-hearted exercise with a serious intent. By putting navigation practice into a game-like context, this module provides added incentive for the constant practice that a laparoscopic surgeon needs. The module is complete with progressively more difficult "levels", scoring, time bonuses etc.
In this exercise the objective is to measure a predetermined length of the upper intestine. The camera is controlled by the computer and the instruments consists of two graspers. A suction device with markings of one centimeter in width is also inserted.

Here the student learns how to safely remove surrounding tissue from a vessel structure. The objective is to remove the small vessels without damaging the larger ones. A diathermy hook and a grasper instrument is available. The abstract object must be grasped and stretched carefully as the small vessels are being burnt by the hook.
