Software release - LapSim 2008
Our latest software release, LapSim 2008, aims to further enhance the training experience when working with LapSim. Below you can read about some of the enhancements in this software release.
In the example below we have use the Clip Applying exercise from the Basic Skills package to demonstrate the different features of the program.
Read about the objective before you start an exercise in LapSim. In the Clip Applying exercise the objective is to learn how to divide a vessel by applying clips and then cut the vessel using scissors.
The Background section tells you about the clinical background and what is important to keep in mind when performing the exercise as well as a real operation.
Video clips from real operations related to the exercise are available in the LapSim program. Typically there are video clips showing an experienced operator as well as an inexperienced one. A speakers voice guides you through the different steps in the procedure and tells you about common mistakes made by beginners.
» View video clip with experienced operator
This section gives you instructions on the conditions in the simulation. You can read about what instrumets are available in the exercise, whether the camera is controlled by the computer or by the "operator" etc.
Before starting an exercise you can watch a video clip from the simulation where the exercise is performed in a preferred way. In the Clip Applying exercises there are different scenarios and a video clip for each scenario.
We offer our clients to take part of existing courses and settings in LapSim that have been validated through scientific studies (read more). However, many of our clients want to run courses designed to meet their specific needs.
One of the strengths of the LapSim program is its ability to let users design their own courses, adding and adjusting exercises as well as making sure that the difficulty level is optimal for the students taking the course. To further facilitate the use of this function LapSim 2008 comes with a wizard for designing courses.
Name your course and add a comment if you like. Here you also decide on whether the training blocks and exercises must be completed in a sequence, if continued training after course completion is allowed and how the results should be displayed.
Here you add exercises to your course and arrange them in blocks that you categorize as training or exam. You also set the number of tries allowed by each student on the exercises in the exam blocks. You can easily rearrange the order of the exercises and blocks and add or remove training modules as you wish.
All exercises are given default settings when added to a course. Here you can however change the settings and requirements for each exercise. You can change stretch sensitivity on vessels, bleeding probability, number of segments etc. If you want to give your students an extra challenge you can add a moving camera allowing them to practice operating with a bad camera holder. When you are happy with the settings you press “Try” to test the exercise with the new settings yourself.
After an exercise is completed in LapSim a result view is displayed to give feedback on the performance. The student can see whether the criteria set by the course administrator was met and what skills need to be improved. Detailed information is available but has now been packaged into a lighter format to give the student a better overview of the results and the information available.
Some of the information has been hidden in tooltips and is accessed by hovering the pointer over the parameter of interest. The tooltips also give the student hints and tips on what aspects of the performance that need to be improved and how. A student that wants to go deeper into the information at a later occasion can use a new function that allows the information in the result view to be printed out.
