For more than 13 years, Surgical Science has pioneered the development of state-of-the-art virtual reality laparoscopic medical training simulators, focused on usability, applicability in clinical education, and continued technological and instructional advancements.
Surgical Science’s mission is to develop and deliver cutting edge medical simulation training products with unequaled graphics, usability and skills transference from VR to the OR in an effort to improve performance through practice.
The History of Surgical Science
In 1995 in Gothenburg, Sweden, Dr. Anders Hyltander, a senior GI surgeon at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, believed that novice surgeons could be trained in critical skills and procedures long before entering the operating room. He theorized that real-time simulators could be developed to bridge the gap between classroom pedagogy and patient. Together with three young, skilled and brilliant software engineers, Dr. Hyltander tested that hypothesis to great success.
Four years later in 1999, the quartet founded Surgical Science. After testing their simulator hypothesis, Dr. Hyltander, president of the newly formed company, and his three software engineer co-founders recognized the market’s need for a comprehensive, dynamic virtual reality product to allow laparoscopic surgeons to hone their skills in a safe, rigorous and progressive environment before operating on humans. A number of essential cornerstones were quickly identified, that all future products must be flexible, upgradeable, run on a standard PC platform and represent state-of-the-art dynamic graphic simulations based on recreations of actual surgeries.
Surgical Science’s initial offering, LapSim®, was launched in 2001 to tremendous market response. Since then, LapSim has expanded to include best-in-class procedural simulation for cholecystectomy, appendectomy, advanced suturing and anastomosis, gynecology, hysterectomy, bariatrics and nephrectomy.
Dr. Hyltander and his co-founders built Surgical Science with a clear vision – to benefit patients and the medical community by bringing a comprehensive, rigorous and dynamic instructional system to surgical trainees. With a legacy rooted in surgical medicine and technology development, Surgical Science is helping medical professionals around the world train faster, safer and more efficiently than ever before.
Today, two of the original software engineer founders – David Löfstrand and Anders Larsson – continue their work with Surgical Science and Dr. Hyltander serves as a senior advisor.
